Part I of Formulaic Writing: Addiction and Abuse are not the Prerequisites to Great Story11/24/2020 part I:
more tired Ah-murican writing tropes: drug addiction, rape, abuse, abandonement & overcoming it seems to be the only heroe's journey that makes in Ah-murican storytelling. We're so limited in our experience of good writing & storytelling that we only celebrate these limited stories of the human condition. Story should expand our vision beyond the same fictionalized tropes we see over & over again. These tropes limit our view of what's possible. we have this idea that there are few options for the lives we live unless we rise to the top the way American storytelling has told us to do. life is so much bigger than than abandonement, drug addiction, heal by rising to the top of a man's money-making game... i read Neruda, LeGuinn, Morrison, Mahfouz, Elliot, Butler, when I was a kid; great storytelling is abt the specificity & uniqueness of each heroine's journey. These writers taught me to expect more from my life than the repeated sad stories of addiction & abuse; that assuming the world is dark was the quickest way to stay stuck in the reality I was in the reality tv show government we've been living through comes from a similar assumption: the world is dark, all that matters is power, money & addictions (drugs, money, sex, shopping, etc). When darkness is the expectation, no wonder we can't find our way out. we have a story that everything is dark & only heaven or fame, money will solve it & make us feel better. then we look for stories that affirm this world view no wonder we're having such a hard time climbing out of this shit show of a reality we've created. we've lost the ability to imagine anything else as success, survival or failure. there is darkness in the world, but has many more expressions than the one we're being sold as entertainment. this lack of imagination wears on the soul & steals our ability go create a different world where addiction & abusive childhoods are the only pre-requisites for genius & success
