My Response to a Gifted Playwright Incensed by her 3rd Rejection From New Dramatists (insert any play development lab, it all works)
the system is rigged, love...each powerful theatre or mfa program decides who’s going to be the playwright star each year based on race, gender, marketability of content and does the work follow the same old structural and thematic tropes that happen to be in style right now...if ur not selected as “heir apparent” by one of these institutions or have a play that someone’s already decided to produce (and they’re dev labs to create buzz), then u don’t become heir apparent...and guess what? each category can only have one “genius” per category selected...its has to do with institutions w/money backing their fighter...and guess what: fuck them...tv/film rewards writers who self produce and build audience, why would u want to create for a structure in business to work you to death and keep u poor? there’s very little glory and no money (u get $15k for an option after 6 years of student loans and a decade of work on a play?) add up the hours and don’t drink the koolaide:::theater is sn charitable and intellectual hobby for old, inherited money AKA the ruling class...it ain’t about you or for you so i really don’t understand the obsession for demanding that a structure that ain’t about us (funded by rich white people for rich white people) should address our needs...for what? for a times review and a pittance of what you deserve?
